Abstract

Nowadays, a major issue in transportation is weight reduction. This paper deals with weight reduction of about 3.5% over the total weight of a railway vehicle by substituting an aluminium roof with a composite material design. The design was done by static calculations, and this paper deals with the RSSB Standard GMRT 2100 requiring a roof sufficiently strong to resist the penetration into the vehicle of a concrete cube weighing 100 kg dropped from a height of 3.0 m above the roof at 300 km/h. Calculations are carried out by the finite analysis method. Both aluminium and composite roofs are compared.
