Abstract

A prototype capacitor charging power supply (CCPS) utilising the Ward converter circuit topology has been developed and evaluated by charging various values of energy storage capacitors and discharging them at various repetition rates. This converter topology is naturally protected against short circuit conditions. The primary side of the transformer appears as a current source to the energy storage capacitor, which is a desirable characteristic when charging a large capacitor. The operation of the CCPS is discussed, followed by the analysis and design of the CCPS. Experimental results obtained from the CCPS are given. >
