Abstract

In this paper, the characteristics of a microstrip antenna for millimeter-wave applications with Frequency Selective Surface (FSS) as superstrate are studied. The properties of the uni-planar unit cell are presented. The result shows that the proposed unit cell exhibits a pass-band property along 26.5 GHz-30 GHz frequency band and it represents the basic element of 11x11 array, which is applied on a conventional microstrip antenna operating in the same previous frequency band. The directivity of the antenna with FSS screen is improved in the H-plan, the gain is enhanced and it has a stable value ($\approx$ 6 dB) along the operating band of the FSS unit cell as compared with the microstrip antenna alone. The High Frequency Structure Simulation (HFSS) software packages are used to design and analyze the proposed structures.
