Abstract
Centrifugal compressor is probably one of the most used compressors in the industry but at the same time the flow inside it is very complex, highly turbulent and three-dimensional in nature. It is very important to carry out energy-efficient design of centrifugal compressor followed by detailed analysis in view of energy saving opportunity. In the present study detailed design and analysis of centrifugal compressor is done. The input design parameters were obtained from the Compressor manufacturing company viz. pressure ratio of 3.5, mass flow rate as 4.2 kg/s, rotational speed as 14000 rpm. The design was done based on the standard process followed in the Industry. Iterative method was followed wherein the calculations were done for different mass flow rates and efficiencies were calculated. As the compressor was heavily not loaded radial curved vanes were selected in place of backward curved vanes. Pre whirl at the inlet was not recommended because of the low Mach number. After the design, outlet stagnation pressure was obtained as 352.14 kPa and the overall compressor efficiency was found as 84.72%. The results were compared with the Experimental data provided by Manufacturer and found in very good agreement.
