Abstract

In the ongoing struggle to teach liter ature to college students, I have in creasingly availed myself of unor thodox devices because they work, whether or not they represent the latest trend in literary theory. In particular, I have begun to use more of what my public school teachers called aids. It is true, however, that the use of visual aids, even on the college level, has been given new sanction by devel opmental learning theories. Besides using such items as portraits of writers and famous illustrations of texts, I make, or have students make, draw ings on the board to clarify the content of literary works and the concepts as sociated with them. This sketching has taken traditional forms, such as maps of Candide's and the Ancient Mariner's travels. It has also taken rather bizarre forms?as on the day I wrote the names of the absurdists Beckett and Ionesco on the board, pointed out that their work was primarily in French, drew a little cone over their names, and said in my best imitation of Dan Ackroyd, They are from France.
