Abstract

Metadata is a term more and more frequently heard in the library arena. The common definition for metadata is data that describe data. The focus of this article is the effort to develop standards for the creation and sharing of these metadata. The first part of the article looks at cross-disciplinary metadata activity, while the second part examines individual communities which are developing standards of interest to the academic library community
