Abstract

In this review, the theoretical treatment of D and B meson decays is summarized in the framework of the standard gauge theory of electroweak and strong interactions. The emphasis lies on the description of exclusive semileptonic and hadronic decays. A consistent phenomenological picture based on the valence quark approximation and the factorization hypothesis is developed. The importance of rare B decays for testing the standard model is also discussed.
