DESCRIPTION OF PRESIDENTIAL FUNCTIONS

Abstract

This year the regular presidential election will be held again, and the head of state for the next four years will be chosen by the parliament of Latvia. Although in recent years there has been an active discussion about the need for a publicly elected president in Latvia, the public often thinks that the President of Latvia has a purely representative function, but that is not entirely true. Representing the country is, of course, a crucial and visible aspect of the president's duties, but it is only one of the president's external functions, in addition to which there are several other functions that are important for public administration. The President of Latvia is involved in all three branches of government - executive, legislative and judicial, which means that his competence is broader than it might seem without any analysis of the constitutional structure of Latvia.
