Abstract
A new species of Aspidoras (Corydoradinae) is described from the Serra dos Carajas, lower Tocantins River basin, representing the northernmost record of the genus at the edge of the Brazilian Shield into the Amazon basin. Aspidoras gabrieli is easily distinguished from all congeners by having the rays and interradial membranes of the dorsal and pectoral fins entirely and densely pigmented, the inner bony margin of the pectoral spine expanded as a narrow laminar shelf with edge smooth or scarcely serrated; lateral-line canal posterior to the two anterior lateral-line ossicles absent (also in A. taurus), naked predorsal region (also in A. velites and A. psammatides), large brown oval spots on the flank and caudal peduncle that sometimes merge to form irregular patches (also in A. maculosus, A. albater, A. lakoi, and A. depinnai), and several additional morphometric distinguishing features.
