Abstract
A new brucella-phage was isolated from a batch of Tbilisi (Tb) phage prepared 5 years previously. Unlike Tb phage this phage strain, designated MC/75, replicated with high efficiency in Brucella abortus and Br. suis and to a less extent in Br. neotomae cultures. It did not replicate in cultures of Br. melitensis or rough brucella strains. Although morphologically identical with them, MC/75 could be distinguished from Tb and the other brucella-phages on the basis of its adsorption characteristics, stability to inactivating agents and serological specificity. The precise origins of the phage could not be determined. It was concluded that it probably arose as a result of a mutation during propagation of Tb phage.
