Abstract

The phase diagram of the AgSnSe system is described using differential thermal analysis, X-ray diffraction and metallography experiments. Two ternary phases are observed: the compound Ag 8SnSe 6, having a congruent melting point and a phase transition at 83 °C, and an Ag x Sn 1− x Se solid solution of the NaCl type, with 0.42 < x < 0.53. Five binary sections are described in the ternary system. Ten ternary invariants are characterized: five eutectics among which two are degenerated at the selenium apex, and five ternary peritectics. Two liquid-liquid immiscible phases are observed, one of which persists through the system, from the Ag-Se side to the Sn-Se side.
