Abstract

Description and measurements of the egg, larva and nymph of S. subtriquetra which included the egg envelope, penetrating apparatus, body rings, tail, legs, dorsal organ and oral ring of the larva, and the oral ring, mouth hooks and ventral rows of body spines of the nymph, place this pentastomid in the Porocephalida, although the dorsal organ and the tail of the larva resemble those of the Cephalobaenida. The life cycle of S. subtriquetra was observed in experimentally infected Cichlasoma nigrofasciatum; both larvae and nymphs were found in the natatory vesicle of the host. The penetrating system used by the larvae in Priapichlys annectens, Lebistes spp. and a tadpole was also studied.
