Abstract
Este artículo rescata la historia olvidada del collage en la América Latina desde las vanguardias históricas hasta la época contemporánea. Considera que este olvido se debe a que se privilegió el paradigma de la síntesis en detrimento de la fragmentación entendida aquí en tanto proceso analítico de la imagen. El collage aparece en América Latina en el fotomontaje, técnica libre de rigideces conceptuales que se va afianzando a partir de los años cuarenta. En los últimos tres decenios se constata su auge, coincidente con el fracaso del Estado, la fe en su funcionamiento y la ideología que lo sostenía. El collage es solidario con las estéticas contemporáneas de fragmentación y explora posibilidades expresivas nuevas en contextos políticos y sociales de intensa conflictividad, relacionados con la memoria y la violencia conduciendo al desmontaje del imaginario colectivo y de las ficciones modernistas.

Decomposition, re-composition: towards a history of the fragment and collage in Latin American arts. This article highlights the forgotten history of collage in Latin America, from its historical vanguards to today. Collage is the language of fragmentation contemporary aesthetics and explores new expressive possibilities in new social and political contexts of intense conflict, related to memory and violence leading to dismantling collective imaginary and modernist fictions.
