Abstract

Starting from slabs as model nuclei we study the effect of desaturation in the energy density approach using several classes of nuclear energy densities. A prescription is presented leading from the results for slabs to spherical nuclei. For the SkM interaction — neglecting the spin-orbit and asymmetry parts — the desaturation effect in the density is found to be appreciable even for medium size nuclei with A ⩽ 60, unlike the energy which is affected only for A ⩽ 5. The effects depend sensitively on the special functional form of the energy density, even if the relevant bulk and surface properties are fixed.
