Abstract

Water scarcity is a global challenge that poses significant threats to human health, food security, and economic development. Desalination and advanced water treatment technologies have emerged as crucial solutions to alleviate water scarcity by converting saltwater and impaired water into freshwater suitable for various purposes. Desalination methods, including Reverse Osmosis (RO), Multi-Stage Flash (MSF) Distillation, Multi-Effect Distillation (MED), and Electro dialysis (ED), enable the conversion of saltwater into freshwater through various processes. Advanced water treatment technologies, such as Advanced Oxidation Processes (AOPs), Membrane Filtration, Activated Carbon Filtration, and Biological Treatment, further purify water from diverse sources, including impaired water and wastewater. These technologies play a vital role in meeting the increasing demands for freshwater while improving water quality. This chapter provides an overview of the principles, methods, and applications of desalination and advanced water treatment, highlighting their significance in addressing water scarcity and promoting sustainability.
