Abstract

The work proposes to discuss the articulation between the organizational designs of the psychiatric hospitalization institutions in Uruguay with the paradigm shift in mental health care models that have been processed in this country in recent years. The research is focused on the Vilardebó Hospital, the main institution of psychiatric hospitalization in Uruguay. The methodological design of the research was based on the use of qualitative techniques for data collection. They were made to qualified informants and to medical and non-medical personnel of the Hospital. The research shows that the Vilardebó Hospital as a mental health institution has an operating logic where patient care is prioritized within the institution's frameworks, while the new paradigm of mental health care points to the decentralization of medical care for people with mental illness.
