Abstract
Objective: to identify the challenges faced by nursing mothers, newborns and family members and the strategies for breastfeeding newborns admitted to Brazilian neonatal intensive care units. Method: integrative review of the literature carried out in Scopus, Latin American and Caribbean Health Sciences Literature, Medical Literature Analysis and Retrieval System Online and Base de Dados de Enfermagem, in July 2023. The search strategy used was “Breast Feeding” AND “Intensive Care Units” AND “Neonatal” OR “Newborn”. The organization and pre-analysis were developed in Rayyan®, and the studies were subjected to Thematic Content Analysis. Results: it was found that the challenges are multifactorial and include: damage to the bond between the mother and the newborn, newborn’s physiological immaturity, prematurity, low weight, clinical complications, surgical procedures, difficulties in breast milk expression, insufficient knowledge and psychological factors. The strategies point to ongoing health education, skin-to-skin contact, a multidisciplinary approach, the inclusion of family members in support groups, speech therapy assessment prior to breastfeeding and institutional spaces for health professionals to share experiences. Conclusion: care regarding breastfeeding, in the critical context evaluated, is longitudinal, multifactorial and encompasses care, teaching and management actions.
