Abstract

Abstract Shilling Boundaries : Orality and Literature in Southern Africa. — So much emphasis has been laid on the formai opposition between orality and writing that we cannot grasp the dynamic continuity between the two, especially in southern Africa. After inventorying the major functions of oral narratives (the functions of definition, identity, and didactics; historical, linguistic, aesthetic and religious functions), it is shown that there are ongoing exchanges between these two systems of communication, especially in the sphere of theater and in that of poetry read in public. The political situation in South Africa has had considerable importance because of the widespread mobilization in literary circles against apartheid.
