Abstract

Dermoid cyst is often used to describe three closely related histologic cysts, but dermoid, epidermoid, and teratoma cysts are considered rare in the floor of the mouth. Epidermal cysts seldom occur in the head and neck region compared to dermoid cysts, and when they do occur, they involve the floor of the mouth. Histologically, all dermoid cysts are lined by epidermis. Cyst lining content determines the histological categories of these cysts. They are epidermoid if epidermis lines the cyst, dermoid if skin annexes exist, and teratoid if tissues are derived from the three germinal layers.
