Abstract

This manpower survey investigates the entry of dermatologists into the US health care system, the extent and nature of their provision of care (contact with patients), and the nature and rate of depletion of dermatologic manpower (exit). The principal purpose of the survey was to determine dermatology's present status in providing effective health care. A secondary purpose, that of clarifying the issues of the nature of need for dermatologists, remains to be studied further. According to analysis of available published data, dermatologists are increasing at a rate slightly faster than the population, with variations from one region of the country to another.
