Abstract

This chapter is designed as a practical review of the most common skin diseases in dogs and cats and how to approach them clinically. The first section of the chapter is focused on the dermatological examination and the most commonly used diagnostic techniques in veterinary dermatology. The second part of the chapter is discussing specific skin diseases more in detail. In particular, the group of diseases discussed include bacterial, fungal, and parasitic skin diseases; allergies, autoimmune, and nodular skin diseases. For each disease, the reader can find information on the etiology, pathophysiology, clinical presentation, differential diagnoses, how to reach a definitive diagnosis, and management. Each disease is also introduced by a short overview of the condition. Each group of diseases is accompanied by a large iconographic collection of images representative of each clinical presentation to help the clinician to better identify and diagnose skin diseases in dogs and cats.
