Abstract

A non-catenated nickel (II) pillared paddlewheel metal-organic framework is synthesized through a combination of solvent-assisted linker exchange and transmetallation. Compared to its isostructural Zn(II) analogue, the nickel (II) pillared paddlewheel metal-organic framework features an enhanced N2 sorption performance. It is notable that the nickel (II)-based metal-organic framework could not (in our hands) be synthesized de novo. The experimental results validate that multiple building-block-replacement (BBR) methods can be utilized to access materials that are challenging to synthesize directly.
