Abstract

Significant progress in the synthesis of substituted icosahedral boron clusters by transition metal catalysis has been made in the past years. This development has enabled the exploration of an increasing number of applications, along with a deepened understanding of the organometallic chemistry of polyhedral boranes. Direct conversion of B H bonds to functionalized boron vertices is an attractive strategy to synthesize cage compounds with desired properties. In this chapter, the derivatization of the anionic boron clusters [B 12 H 12 ] 2 − and [CB 11 H 12 ] − by controlled B H activation is presented.
