Abstract

The reactions of dicyclopentadienyltin and bis(methylcyclopentadienyl)tin with some boron and aluminium trihalides give complexes of composition R 2Sn:MX 3 (R = C 5H 5, MX 3 = BF 3, BBr 3, AlCl 3, AlBr 3; R = MeC 5H 4, MX 3 = AlCl 3). With BCl 3, SnBr 4, and FeCl 3, exchange of cyclopentadienyl groups for halogen takes place. Cyclopentadienyltin chloride and AlCl 3 yield the complex C 5H 5SnAlCl 4. Redistribution of organic groups occurs between cyclohexylmagnesium bromide and dicyclopentadienyltin producing cyclopentadienylmagnesium bromide etherate. Reaction of allyl or trimethylsilyl halides with (C 5H 5) 2Sn: AlX 3 yields C 5H 5SnAlX 4 complexes. The structures of the complexes have been investigated by infrared and tin-119 m Mössbauer spectroscopy.
