Abstract

A simple, closed-form solution is presented in this paper to evaluate the bending moments and stresses which arise from a long dent in a pressurized cylinder. Four different shapes of dent are analysed. The moment and stress resultants are derived in closed form by Fourier series. Because of the localized nature of the dent shapes, the moment and stress resultants converge very slowly. To speed up the rate of convergence of the solution, the moment function is modified and consequently, a converged solution can be obtained with less than seven Fourier terms. Two illustrative examples are presented to show the behaviour of dents in relation to their shapes and degree of localization.
