Abstract

CIC 517 § 2 allows for the diocesan bishop to appoint deacons and laity to take part in the pastoral work of a parish, when the parish priest's role cannot be filled because of a shortage of priests. The Austrian Bishops' Conference has issued directives for the prac- tical implementation of this regulation. Just as in several other Austrian dioceses, in Salzburg the new position of parish assistant was launched, in which deacons and laity collaborate in the parish priest's work of pastoral care. Based on the relevant diocesan canonical regulations, the areas of competence associated with this role, and also the tasks of the parish priest, who in Salzburg carries the title Pfarrprovisor, are agreed and recorded in writing at the beginning of a person's period of service.
