Abstract

Since criticism has only known about the existence of Cakavian texts from the seaside area before the 17th century, the Kajkavian dramatised planctus written in 1626 that was found in 1997 in Csiksomlyo/Sumuleu, Romania counts as a text of unique value in old Croatian literature. In this essay, we will place our Kajkavian planctus among related Croatian texts and also compare it with the so-called Picic-text which it stands closest to in detail. In addition, we will mention the possible Hungarian connections, too. We will also attempt to identify the author who signs the text as Andreas Knesajich. We think that he is identical with the Franciscan friar, Andras Zagrabi studying in Gyongyos, who, among others, was sent to Csiksomlyo due to the order of Peter Pazmany. Finally, to illustrate the Slavic intellectual background of our text, we will briefly describe the Transylvanian activi-ties of the Bosnian Franciscans.
