Abstract

Jean, the nurse in this particular case, was a registered mental nurse (RMN) who worked at a large 50-bedded elderly mentally ill (EMI) nursing and residential care home. She often acted as the named person in charge of the home, but always refused to take the post permanently. Jean did, however, accept a post as deputy matron, but she still preferred to see herself as ‘one of the workers’ and liked to fraternize with the untrained staff.
