Abstract
THE TERMS muscle and perception' have been much abused during the past five years. They have become common terms, especially in the air forces of all nations, and have thereby presented a confused problem to many ophthalmologists who have been asked to examine young men desirous of becoming air force pilots. The terms muscle and have been used synonymously by persons not fully informed, and the significance of the state of the ocular muscle balance in relation to depth perception and to flying ability has been a source of worry to medical officers of the air forces. The Royal Canadian Air Force during the past few years has tried to solve this problem ; this paper presents a summary of some of the results of various studies which it has carried out.
