Abstract

Sentences were monaurally presented to subjects who were required to perform either a superficial (word-matching) or meaningful (thematic analysis) orienting task during presentation. A right-ear advantage was observed for speed of response under both processing conditions, but only sentences that had been meaningfully processed showed a right-ear advantage on a test of long-term memory. It is suggested that the left hemisphere is specialized for the meaningful use of language as well as for speech perception.
