Abstract

Nicandro de Figueiredo Neto**Percutaneous vertebroplasty (PV) is a minimally inva-sive procedure used to treat focal pain of osteoporotic ver-tebral fractures, osteolytic metastatic disease, myeloma and aggressive hemangioma. PV has some potential com-plications: the most common are caused by cement extru-sion, usually asymptomatic, but may lead to clinical compli-cations, such as radicular or spinal cord compression and lung embolism. A new cannula for cement injection was de-veloped by Heini and Allred, by closing the frontal aper-ture and opening a lateral one, close to the tip of the tra-ditonal cannula. This allows the flow of cement to be re-directed medially, thus reducing the risk of cement ex-travasation and increasing the safety of the procedure.
