Abstract
In this study we consider the complexity of the condition known as depression. We studied both physiological and psychological aspects of the disorder by using psychodynamically oriented interviews, sleep EEGs, and dreams collected in the laboratory. We found considerable variability in the sleep, psychodynamic, and dream patterns. Some possible relations of these patterns to treatment results were noted. We discuss these findings in relation to recent sleep research and classical psychodynamic formulations of depression.
