Abstract

This article briefly summarizes the research on depression in young people Although depression is rare in the general population of minors, it is diagnosed in a significant percentage of pediatric and child psychiatry patients DSMIII criteria are useful in making a diagnosis, but depressed young people also have conduct problems and anxiety disorders Preliminary reports of family studies indicate a strong prevalence of affective psychopathology in the pedigrees of depressed young people Peer and family relationships are impaired in depressed children Research on treatment outcome is in early stages Regardless of treatment response, many patients have relapses throughout their childhood and adolescence.
