Abstract

Community-based studies document the increased risk of depression in women during the perimenopause compared with both the premenopause and the later postmenopause. The timing of the onset of depressive episodes during the perimenopause and the clinical characteristics of women with perimenopausal depression (PMD) remain to be fully characterized. This longitudinal study prospectively defined the clinical characteristics throughout reproductive aging in women with and without PMD.
