Abstract

Trans fatty acids in the form of hydrogenated margarine stock were fed to rats. Trans fatty acids were found to be deposited in the tissues only when they were present in the diet. The largest amounts of the deposited trans fatty acids were found in the carcass fat, smaller amounts in the liver, and only small quantities were excreted in the feces; the major portion of the ingested trans fatty acids were metabolized. When the trans fatty acids were removed from the diet they gradually decreased in amount in the tissues. The presence of trans fatty acids in the diet did not appear to inhibit growth.
