Abstract

Platinum nano-particles were deposited from 0.01 M hexaxhloroplatinate acid solutions on high oriented pyrolytic graphite substrates using a cyclic potential sweeping method. The particles were examined using scanning tunneling microscopy (STM). The Pt particles deposited on the highly oriented pyrolytic graphite from a 0.01 M hexaxhloroplatinate acid without supporting solute were about 5 nm in size with a small variance. It was found that these Pt nano-particles were ellipsoidal without apparent crystalline facet but with a high density of surface defects. The Pt particles deposited on the highly oriented pyrolytic graphite from a 0.01 M hexaxhloroplatinate acid with H2SO4 as supporting solute were about 10-100 nm in size with a much greater variance.
