Abstract

Deposition and drift of the aerial application of fenvalerate at 0.11 kg (AI)/ha as 28 liters of emulsion per ha, and ultra-low-volume (ULV) at 2.3 and 3.5 liters of cotton seed oil carrier per ha, were compared for fan nozzles and Micronair rotary atomizers. Deposits were measured by glass plates or aluminum foil panels distributed across the treated areas, and from leaf samples collected in three levels of the cotton canopy. Drift was measured out to 800 m, using static collectors (aluminum foil panels) and high-volume air samples. In 1981, foliage and target deposits were much greater from 28 liters of emulsion per ha than 2.3 liters of oil. Drift measured from static collectors to 400 m indicated that ULV resulted in four times the drift of the emulsion. High-volume air samplers collected slightly greater drift from the emulsion than from the ULV application. In 1982 foliage, deposition at all three levels of cotton canopy was: 28 liters, emulsion > 2.3 liters, fan > 2.3 liters, rotary atomizer. Drift measured from static collectors and high-volume air samplers was: 2.3 liters, rotary atomizer> 28 liters, emulsion> 3.5 liters, fan ≃ 3.5 liters, rotary atomizer.
