Abstract

For not very highly excited states the level width in μ-mesic atoms is considerably smaller than the distance between fine structure levels. Spin-orbit interaction should therefore lead to considerable depolarization of μ −-mesons involved in the formation of μ-mesic atoms. The magnitude of this effect is estimated. The influence of hyperfine splitting of the μ-mesic atom ground state on the angular distribution of neutrons created in the capture of μ −-mesons by nuclei is also considered.
