Abstract

A study has been made of the way in which charge exchange phenomena in the residual gas can induce depolarization in the terminal of a tandem accelerator. Depolarization effects are found to be less than ≈0.2% under most conditions. A simple technique for evaluating an upper limit on the magnitude of the depolarization prevailing under operating conditions is developed.
