Abstract

Phosphatidylinositol 4,5-biphosphate has been implicated in a variety of cellular processes, including neurotransmitter release. Here we present evidence for the strong influence of an inhibitor of phosphatidylinositol 4-kinase, phenylarsine oxide, on depolarization- and α-latrotoxin-evoked exocytotic release of [3H]GABA from the rat brain synaptosomes. Our data also show that subnanomolar concentrations of the toxin stimulate the process of exocytosis per se, while nanomolar toxin concentrations in addition cause neurotransmitter outflow from the cytosolic pool.
