Abstract

The particle and energy fluxes in toroidal axisymmetric plasma columns in the low-collisionality regime are calculated for high- beta plasmas ( beta approximately epsilon where beta is the ratio of the energy densities of the plasma and of the confining magnetic field and epsilon is the inverse aspect ratio of the plasma column). It is shown that, although the particle diffusion coefficient decreases as the value of beta is increased from beta approximately epsilon 2 to beta approximately epsilon , the particle and energy confinement times have only a small relative increase of the order of 10%.
