Abstract

The conditions in plane elasticity under which stress is independent of Poisson's ratio are well known. In the present note, the explicit dependence of stress on Poisson's ratio is derived for the case when these conditions are not met because of unbalanced forces on internal boundaries. The result shows that knowledge of stress in two models with different Poisson's ratios is sufficient for the determination of stress in a prototype of any Poisson's ratio. Extensions regarding body forces and dislocation, temperature and residual stresses are indicated.
