Abstract
In recent years, SF6 gas is extensively utilized as an insulation gas for high voltage power apparatus, such as gas insulated switchgears (GIS), transformers, etc.1 One of the most important techniques to keep high reliability of such apparatus is an insulation diagnostic technique. in GIS, insulation defects like metallic particles would cause the partial discharge (PD) and may lead to breakdown (BD).2 Therefore, it is very important for the stable operation of GIS to detect and measure PD based on its discharge mechanism in SF6 gas. However, under ac voltage application the temporal change of the instantaneous voltage values and the polarity makes the space charge behavior generated by PD so complicated that there is much difficulty to clarify the PD mechanism. Until now, a few study has tried to investigate the PD mechanism with consideration of space charge behavior under ac voltage application.3
