Abstract

The demand for treatment with non-surgical fat-reduction modalities is increasing. According to statistics reported by the American Society for Dermatologic Surgery (2015) , 67% of consumers have concerns about their submental fullness. In response to this, the aesthetic industry has introduced a new category of injectables to achieve the complete opposite of existing products: where indications for administering cosmetic injectables typically relate to the need to add volume to reduce the signs of ageing, deoxycholic acid is used to remove volume in order to reduce signs of ageing. After just 2 years, deoxycholic acid has pushed its way into fifth place of the top five injectable treatments available in the US, with a 90% growth rate in the year 2015. Since its launch, it has grown faster than botulinum toxin type A (Botox) did in its infancy. This article explores the techniques and advantages of incorporating deoxycholic acid into aesthetic practice.
