Abstract
A few esthetic considerations in preparing complete dentures have been correlated with some functional requirements. It was suggested that artistic devices could be combined with biological engineering. The improvement in the cosmetic effect of dentures may be easy for the artist, likewise the functional requirements may be accomplished by the clinical scientist, but denture esthetics necessitates the union of both disciplines. A continuous study should be made of the pleasing characteristics of natural teeth and the investing tissues. If these observations can be imitated in substitutes, the illusion of reality may be obtained. Hand molded teeth, positioned to conform to functional requirements, give excellent esthetic results. The topigraphical arrangement of the accommodating gingival architecture should be skillfully reproduced in the wax-up. The addition of lines, colors, contours and textures aids the illusion of surface anatomy. Denture esthetics should include but go beyond cosmetic effects and be further enhanced by total responsiveness. The framing of the dental composition by the lips during various happy expressions should be encouraged. The dentist who reconstructs anatomy esthetically and restores function, and at the same time treats the mind, is truly a physician. 7
