Abstract

Dental image segmentation is a crucial task in dental image processing and analysis. Dental x-ray image is complex due to its different structures. This segmentation is important for many types of oral disease detection and to solve biometric purpose also. Dental x-ray image are of four types. These are panoramic, bitewing, periapical and Occlusal X-rays. Our proposed method is validated on bitewing, panoramic and periapical dental x-ray images. In this research work, we have proposed a dental teeth segmentation technique using marker based water based technique. The watershed method is a well known tool image segmentation technique. However, it does not result good for x-ray image, because the segmented individual region are almost same perceptually. In order to properly segment such regions the concept of the Marker based Watershed technique is introduced. A marker driven Watershed method is applied to segment the teeth regions. The proposed method is validated on bench marked dataset and achieved 89.78% accuracy in 324.45 mili-seconds. The execution time is quite faster than the popular existing methods
