Abstract

AbstractThe main reason why we trust our dentist to do the right thing is because we rely on his or her professionalism. Professionalism refers to the fact that a dental professional always puts the patient’s interest first, has the competence to act accurately, and is accountable for what he or she does. Professionalism has to do with personal values, and with observable behaviour. It is also about personal development, growing from a student stage novice to an experienced practitioner. In professionalism, also changing societal or cultural perspectives are reflected, whilst at the same time virtues and values as old as Hippocrates’ days are maintained.KeywordsProfessionalismProfessional behaviourEthicsDentistryHealth careReflection skillsEducation
