Abstract

With a few alterations in the method of treatment of the patient on hemodialysis, the various procedures of general dentistry, periodontics, endodontics, and exodontia can be performed satisfactorily. The following measures are recommended: 1. The patient should be premedicated with prophylactic ampicillin prior to exodontia. 2. Surgical procedures should be scheduled to follow a dialysis session. 3. The short-acting barbiturates should be used if premedication is required. 4. Propoxyphene or codeine should be used for effective analgesia. 5. Smaller and less frequent doses of medications cleared by the kidney should be used to maintain a sufficiently high serum concentration. 6. Only one tooth should be extracted initially to determine the patient's response. 7. Operative procedures should be performed in a routine manner.
