Abstract

The founding of 7 dental schools in the Republic of China marks the official and formal dental education as a discipline separate from medicine. However all the dental programs in R.O.C are university affiliated, therefore the current 5-year undergraduate curricula of these dental schools have provided students with broadly-based levels of theoretical and practical knowledge in the biological, clinical, behavior and social sciences. To ensure that graduates have sufficient levels of technical skill to practice general dentistry, the 6th year students are assigned to teaching hospitals to finish their rotating internship. The graduate dentistry has been established to meet the needs of the country’s advanced dental education. Two graduate institutes offer two-year programs leading to the degree Master of Medical Sciences. This paper provides information on student admission, curriculum, faculty, teaching hospitals and other aspects of dental education of the Republic of China. Comments on the future dental science education in ROC are made.
