Abstract

The Harris dispersion relation for electrostatic waves in a hot anisotropic electron plasma is solved for marginally stable waves. The threshold density for the onset of instabilities is studied as a function of frequency, wavelength and direction of propagation of the oscillations, magnetic field intensity, and electron velocity distribution function. The results obtained by simple analytic methods are confirmed by a number of numerical solutions of the dispersion relation.
